Project at The Horton Arts Centre
900 pot stakes ready to be delivered to The Horton Arts Centre.
Last year I was contacted by a charity near Epson to make 900 ceramic pot stakes for the project titled ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’. After several discussions with the Friends of Horton Cemetery Charity, the application was finalised and forwarded to Historic England for funding. Competition was intense with 57 successful bids being announced in August 2022 out of 500 nationwide applications.
It took 1 year for the ceramic flowers, birds, and leaves to be painted at several workshops by the local public, including schools and libraries.
On World Mental Health Day 10th October people gathered in commemoration of the 9000 patients buried in Epsom’s abandoned Cemetery. In their memory, all the ceramic flowers were uniquely painted by hundreds of local residents. This was a year-long project of The Friends of Horton Cemetery, supported by Kings College and Dr Alana Harris reader in History at the University.
I was touched to be asked to place one of the last ceramic flowers at the unveiling Ceremony of the Memorial Garden on the 10th October. The flowers will be on display outside The Horton Arts Centre until 11th November.
